Five Takeaways from the NHL's Return to the Olympics

Image
via Elsa, Getty Images The 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics are officially in the books. What a finish it was for Team USA. Mikaela Shiffrin and Alysa Liu both brought home gold medals earlier in the week, and Megan Keller's golden goal against Canada gave the women's hockey team its third gold medal in program history. Then came Sunday, when Jack Hughes beat Canada in overtime to secure a Team USA-record 12th gold medal at the Winter Games. It was the perfect ending to what turned out to be an unforgettable tournament, and the best possible advertisement for what NHL-caliber best-on-best hockey can look like on the Olympic stage. Here are five takeaways from Milano-Cortina. 1. The NHL Needs to Make This a Priority Twelve years. That's how long it had been since NHL players competed at the Olympics, between a labor dispute in 2018 and COVID wiping out ...

Austria: Euro 2024's Dark Horse

Image
In late November, UEFA unveiled the group stage draw for the 17th edition of the European Championship, scheduled for the upcoming summer in Germany. Here are the groups: As the anticipation builds for the tournament, let's shift our focus away from the familiar teams like England, France, and Germany, and delve into a team that's flying under the radar but could make a substantial impact as a dark horse at Euro 2024: Austria. Now, you might be skeptical. How could Austria, a team with just 2 wins from 10 matches in previous European Championships, be considered a dark horse in Germany? Stranger things have happened in football history, such as Denmark winning the Euro 1992 tournament without even qualifying , or Greece claiming victory in Euro 2004 despite daunting +15000 odds (Austria currently sits at +6500 on Fanduel ). In this century alone, Turkey, Russia, Wales, and Czechia have all secured semi-final appearances. Who's to say the Austrians can't be the surpris...

Premier League Team of the Season (So Far)

Image
As the 2023-24 Premier League season unfolds, we've now crossed the one-third mark of the campaign. This season promises one of the most wide-open title races in recent memory, with league leaders Arsenal only four points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham. During the recent international break, I took the opportunity to craft my Premier League Team of the Season (So Far). I set a single constraint for this exercise – no more than two players from any given team could make the cut. While this might result in some teams being underrepresented, I believe it's the fairest approach. For each player, I'll share pertinent statistics showcasing their impact on the game. Please note that the statistics provided are percentile ranks, comparing players to others in the same position on a per 90 basis. Let's dive in.  GK: Thomas Kaminski - Luton Town In Luton Town's fight against relegation, Thomas Kaminski stands out as a crucial guardian in goal, playing a vital role in keep...

Image
Merely a few months ago, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City became the second club in England to win three straight Premier League titles. The only other side to achieve such a feat was their crosstown rivals, Manchester United, who did it not once but twice during the tenure of Sir Alex Ferguson. In this YouTube video, I explore the different elements that made these special achievements possible. From the incredible players who etched their names in football history: To the influential managers who orchestrated it all:  We explore the similarities and differences between the two teams from a variety of angles. Hope you enjoy! More to come soon.

Christopher Nkunku: The Key to Chelsea's Rebuild

Image
Chelsea stands at a pivotal juncture, facing a make-or-break season following a dismal 12th-place finish. The club's transfer spending, steered by Todd Boehly's ownership, is soaring toward the billion-pound milestone (€996m since June 2022). This investment emphasizes the urgency for the club to avoid another season devoid of European football. With potential Financial Fair Play sanctions looming, the pressure is now entirely on Chelsea to regain their league standing. Amid this high-stakes environment, Chelsea's investment has led to several star acquisitions, notably French international Christopher Nkunku .  Initially rising through Paris Saint-Germain's youth program ranks, Nkunku's star ascended after moving to RB Leipzig in 2019, rapidly becoming a standout player under Julian Nagelsmann 's tutelage. However, during Domenico Tedesco 's tenure in the 2021-22 season, Nkunku solidified himself as one of the continent's elite playmakers. His remarkabl...

Analysis: Joško Gvardiol to Manchester City

After years of pursuit, Manchester City finally secured the coveted Champions League title. While the addition of the prolific Erling Haaland undoubtedly bolstered the squad, it was Pep Guardiola 's renewed emphasis on a fundamental aspect of football—defending—that truly propelled City to their long-awaited triumph. Guardiola, the architect of City’s legacy, pinpointed a critical flaw in his prior teams' defensive structure. The knockout stages of the Champions League demand a different level of resilience, one that his squads often lacked. While their beautiful style and attacking brilliance were undeniable, defensive vulnerabilities had cost them dearly on the grandest stages. However, a pivotal change occurred midway through last season. Guardiola recognized that to conquer European giants like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, City required a defense that matched their attacking might. 🗣️ “I learned this season when you play against [Bukayo] Saka, Vinícius [Júnior], these t...
